Most that know me, know that I pay little attention to pageants and the sort, so that’s why after a few weeks, this is just coming to my attention.
On September 13, 2011 Lelia Lopes, a business student, took home the Miss Universe crown beating a bevy of beauties from around the globe.
This wasn’t the first time Lopes came out on top. She was previously won the Miss Angola UK 2010, Miss Fotogenia 2011 and Miss Angola 2011 awards. The 25-year-old wowed the crowd in Sao Paulo, Brazil and became the first woman from Angola to become Miss Universe.
Lopes replaced last year’s winner, Ximena Navarrete of Mexico, and was ecstatic to take home the honors. (source)
She told reporters:
“Thank God I’m very satisfied with the way God created me and I wouldn’t change a thing,” Lopes said when asked her interview question. “I consider myself a woman endowed with inner beauty. I have acquired many wonderful principles from my family and I intend to follow these for the rest of my life.”
In an interview she stated that “As Miss Angola I’ve already done a lot to help my people, I’ve worked with various social causes. I work with poor kids, I work in the fight against HIV. I work to protect the elderly and I have to do everything that my country needs. I think now as Miss Universe I will be able to do much more.”
She won over the judges with Beauty and Brains!
